8.5 Food Contact Materials

Currently, there is no legislation on packaging harmonized at the State level in Pakistan. Though there are guidelines per Pakistan Standards PS 5474:2021 [1] and its Annex 1 (A) [2], these are not yet implemented in the form of legislation at the state level in Pakistan. As Punjab is the largest Province of Pakistan with respect to population and has detailed legislation on packaging, its Punjab Food Authority (Food Packaging/Contact Material) Regulation, 2018 with its Annex 1 [3] can be referred to.

The migration limits vary depending on the materials. These are as per European Directives of Food Packaging Material migration testing. Testing methods are basically for leaching/migration testing and are detailed in the standard. Declaration of Compliance is required and is done during product registration.
