This section provides information on labeling requirements and the label approval process.

4.1 Mandatory Labeling Parameters

Category

In accordance with the Packaged Food Labeling Act, 2017 [1], the mandatory labeling should include the following on the label, sticker, or bulk container for identification.

  1. Product name (and percentage of each item) - Note: The product name needs to be identical to the commercial invoice and certificate of analysis (COA).
  2. Manufacturer’s name and address
  3. Country of Origin
  4. Expiry date
  5. Batch no./lot no
  6. Net weight

4.2 Languages

Both Bengali and/or English are acceptable. In case of the sale of imported packaged food products into Bangladesh, if the label is in a foreign language other than English, a label or a sub-label should also be attached in Bengali [1]. 

4.3 Mandatory Information on Stickers

It is acceptable to capture mandatory labeling information on additional stickers. Supplementary labels are permitted under Bangladesh Laws. The Food Packaged Food Labeling Act 2017 [1] uses the term “sub-label” relating to the sticker or the supplementary label.

Product

“Food additive” with the product name of all the food additives contained in the mixture and their percentage as follows: "food additives1 xx %, food additives2 xx%, etc."

4.5 Product-specific Labeling Statements

The Packaged Food Labeling Regulations 2017 [1] includes mandatory labeling stating “Genetically Modified Food” for GE food or food ingredients, defined as “product produced through a change in hereditary traits.”, and is applicable if the product contains raw material with any change in the hereditary traits.

In addition, special instructions relating to food processing, packaging, preservation, storage, transportation, and distribution, if any, must be stated on the packaged label.

4.6 Authority Approval

Category

Food

Authority approval is not required since food additives will be used by the food processing industry as raw materials.

4.7 Additional Notes on Labeling

Expired food additives/foods are prohibited for import.
