This section provides the regulatory definition of the food category in scope, or the appropriate food category for the product in scope. Additionally, it provides the food products that belong to this food category along with the definition and specific information on each of these types of food products.
2.1 Category Name & Definition
Food Supplement means a processed food product intended to supplement the diet that bears or contains one or more of the following dietary ingredients: vitamin, mineral, amino acid, herb or other dietary substance of botanical, animal, artificial or natural origin to increase the total daily intake in amounts conforming to the latest Philippines' recommended energy and nutrient intakes or internationally agreed minimum daily requirements.
It usually is in the form of capsules, tablets, liquids, gels, powders or pills and is not represented for use as a conventional food or as the sole item of a meal or diet or replacement of drugs and medicines [1].
Based on the microbiological risk [1]:
- Food supplements containing vitamins and minerals, and/or amino acids are considered medium-risk foods
- Food supplements containing herbs and botanicals, and/or products with other nutritional substances are considered high-risk foods
