6.0 Claim Requirements

This section provides information on the definition of different types of claims and any restrictions or allowance of claims as well as claim registration processes.

6.1 Overview of Claims

6.1.1 Types & Definitions

Refer to Section 6.1.1 in “6.0 Claim Requirements" of the "General Foods" guidebook.

6.1.2 List of Prohibited Claims

“Special Purpose Foods” should follow the all prohibitions listed in Section 6.1.1 in “6.0 Claim Requirements" of the "General Foods" guidebook.

In addition, the following items should be followed:

    • No label of any food shall claim that a food is a special purpose food unless adequate information to support special suitability or nutritional qualities is stated in such label. 
    • Where a special purpose food contains any carbohydrate it shall not be labelled with the word or words 'sugarless" or "sugar free", or any word of similar meaning. The term "carbohydrate" includes alcohol, glycerol, sorbitol or sugar alcohol, and any carbohydrates substance that is capable of being metabolised. [1]

6.2 Nutritional Claims

6.2.1 Permitted Claims

There are no claims specifically permitted to “Special Purpose Foods”.

Additionally, refer to Section 6.2.1 in “6.0 Claim Requirements " of specific product guidebooks under Special Purpose Foods for product-specific claims permissions.

6.2.2 Nutritional Claim Registration

Refer to Section 6.1.1 in “6.0 Claim Requirements" of the "General Foods" guidebook.

6.3 Health Claims

6.3.1 Permitted Claims

Health Claims are not permitted by Malaysia Food Regulations.

6.3.2 Health Claim Registration
