5.1 Overview of Claims

5.1.1 Types & Definitions

Category

Milk Products

5.1.2 List of Prohibited Claims

Category

Milk Products

In addition to the list of prohibited claims outlined in Section 5.1.2 of the "General Foods" guidebook for South Korea, labeling as "like" and "similar" to human milk is prohibited.

Processed Milk

5.2 Nutritional Claims

5.2.1 Permitted Claims

Category

Milk Products

Nutritional claims such as “high” or “rich” are possible in processed milk, fermented milk, cheese, and milk powder.  

Product

Sterilized Milk (including liquid milk, low-fat milk)

Nutritional claims are not allowed for Sterilized Milk.

Processed Milk

(1) Fortified milk must be labeled with the name and content of the fortified ingredients, and may be labeled as fortified milk only if it contains more than 2,000 IU of vitamin A and 400 IU of vitamin D per liter.

(2) In the case of products containing lactic acid bacteria, the number of bacteria contained must be labeled if it is desired to indicate that it contains specific bacteria. (Example) “Lactobacillus acidophilus 100,000,000 (100 million) CFU/g”, “Lactobacillus acidophilus 100 million CFU/g”.

(3) Other permitted nutritional claims are the same as those outlined in Section 5.2.1 of the "General Foods" guidebook for South Korea.

Fermented Milk

Concentrated Milk

Nutritional claims are not allowed for concentrated milk.

5.2.2 Nutritional Claim Registration

Category

Milk Products

1. For nutritional claims that are already permitted for use

Processed milk and fermented milk are allowed to be labeled with a nutritional claim and do not need registration [1]. If functional ingredients are added, such general food with functional labeling requires registration (please refer to Section 5.2.2 of the "General Foods" guidebook for South Korea and to Section 4.6).

2. For nutritional claims that are not currently permitted for use
