This section provides information on labeling requirements and the label approval process.

4.1 Mandatory Labeling Parameters

In addition, since product information or labeling is not normally provided in the packaging containers for self-select products which is not often the case for bakery products, it will need to be displayed on the cabinets or in food service stores as mentioned above.

Standard 1.2.2 [1] describes the requirements relating to product legal names. Unless a food has a “prescribed” name, then a name that sufficiently describes the true nature of the food is adequate (refer to Figure 1 below).

Since there are no prescribed names relating to bakery products, the product name should be adequate to inform consumers of the nature of the food. This could include references such as ‘chocolate cake’, ‘ginger cookies’, ‘fruit and nut slice’, and ‘chocolate brownie’.

1. Packaged (B2B)

GMO, trans fat, and irradiated labeling though not especially applicable for bakery products are reflected for consideration in Sections 3.8 and 4.1 of the "General Foods" guidebook for Australia. However, general labeling advisory statements such as allergen warnings apply to all products. There are also other requirements relating to country of origin. For brevity, these are summarised in Section 4.7 of the "General Foods" guidebook, along with other miscellaneous information.
