4. Labeling Requirements

This section provides information on labeling requirements and the label approval process.


4.1 Mandatory Labeling Parameters

The following items have to be on the label [1,2,4,9]:

  • Name of the product
  • Ingredient list
  • Net weight
  • Name, and address of the manufacturer and local importer/distributor
  • BPJPH/MUI halal logo
  • Date and code of production (batch)
  • Expiry date
  • Registration number
  • Source of certain ingredients (for animal origin, GMO, irradiated, related to halal)
  • Nutrition information
  • Instruction of use (for a product that needs preparation before use)
  • Instruction for storage (for a product whose shelf life depends on storage and demand-specific conditions)
  • Allergen ingredient. List of allergens: milk (with lactose), cereals with gluten, eggs, fish, crustacea, mollusks, peanuts, tree nuts, sulfites min 10mg/kg (as SO2)

GM food product statement should be declared in the ingredient list when a food product contains a minimum of 5% of genetically modified DNA in each GM raw material (except for oil, fat, sugar, starch, or other GM raw materials that had been refined, and no GM proteins were identified). [9]

4.3 Mandatory Information on Stickers

Stickers can be a temporary solution for imported products. In practice, the use of stickers needs to be approved by the Authority on a discussion/agreement. [1]

4.6 Authority Approval

The product label needs to be approved by BPOM during product registration or during revision of the label approval (if the product was registered before). [5-7] 

Product registration [9,10]

  • Cost: IDR 300,000 (19.5 USD) – IDR 3,000,000/product (195 USD).
  • Timeline: 30 working days after documents are completed. Please note that the actual registration process could take longer.

Approval of label revision [10]: 

  • Cost: IDR 100,000/product (7 USD).
  • Timeline: 5 working days after documents are completed. Please note that the actual process could take longer.
