This section provides the compositional requirements for the food category and/or food products in scope and information on permitted nutrients, ingredients, and additives.

3.1 Composition Requirements

Foods controlled by the Thai Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) have their own standards and must comply with the prescribed nutritional standards [1]. 

Examples of standardized foods include infant formula, cheese, honey, fish sauce, milk, butter, etc.

3.2 Raw Material Requirements

Food Act B. E. 2522 [2] specifies general provisions for food and ingredients. Food of the following description shall be deemed impure:

  1. Food that contains anything likely to be dangerous to health.
  2. Food in which a substance of chemical substance has been mixed and could deteriorate the quality unless such admixture is necessary to the process of production and has been authorized by the competent officer.
  3. Food unhygienically produced, packed or stored.
  4. Food produced from having a disease that might be communicated with humans. 
  5. Food in containers made of materials that are likely to be dangerous to health.

3.3 Fortification

No requirements for General Foods; however, fortification is described in specific categories. 

3.4 Other Permitted Ingredients

No specific requirements.

3.5 Permitted Additives

The use of food additives is regulated by MOPH Notification No. 418 [3].

3.6 Permitted Flavors and Colors 

Flavoring agents mean substances used for the flavor or taste of food and shall be classified into 3 types as follows [4]:

  1. Natural flavoring agent - an agent for enhancing taste flavor which is physically derived from plants or animals normally used for human consumption.
  2. Imitate of a natural flavoring agent - flavoring agent derived from chemical extraction or synthesized flavoring agent in which the extracted or synthesized substances shall be of the same chemical properties as the natural products normally used for human consumption and shall mean to include imitate of a natural flavoring agent which contains natural flavoring agent content as well.
  3. A synthesized flavoring agent - a flavoring agent which is not discovered in a natural product normally used for human consumption and means to include a synthesized flavoring agent which contains a natural flavoring agent or imitates a natural flavoring agent.
