3.1 Composition Requirements

3.2 Raw Material Requirements

The raw material used must be compliant with individual product standards when available. The list of standards is found at: https://www.psqca.com.pk/division-wise-standards/agriculture-food-division/ 

3.3 Fortification

There is no general legislation on fortification. However, fortification of some commodities is defined in law. For instance, Vitamin A and Vitamin D fortification of Oil/Fat, Iodine addition to salt, and Wheat Flour Fortification.

3.4 Other Permitted Ingredients

3.5 Permitted Additives

Additives shall be used only within the limits permitted/specified in Pakistan Standard for Food Additives (PS: 2022-1988) [1], or General Standard for Food Additives (CODEX STAN 192-1995) [2].

3.6 Permitted Flavors and Colors 

The specifications for flavor and flavoring substances conform with the specifications recommended by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, JECFA  per Codex Guidelines on the use of flavorings [3].

3.7 Permitted Processing Aids 

As in Good Manufacturing Practices per Codex Guidelines on substances used as processing aids [4].

Halal

All products sold in Pakistan must be halal. 

Novel Food

There is no legislation on Novel food.

GMO

Currently, there is no legislation on GMOs for ingredients of food or for food. However, bulk imports of seeds and plant materials such as maize or soybean are checked stringently for any GMO strains.

Extraction solvent

There is no specific legislation on solvents. However, it should be noted that products containing alcohol are prohibited per halal requirements.

Food enzyme

There is no specific legislation on enzymes and can be based on International best practices such as EU and Codex if available.
