This section provides an overview of the Authorities involved in setting regulations and in managing compliance of the food product in scope.
Secretariat of Health (SSA)
The Secretariat of Health is the government department in charge of all social health services in Mexico.
Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS)
COFEPRIS is the authority with competence to control and regulate drugs, food and beverages, tobacco products, other healthcare supplies (medical devices, vaccines, blood, and tissues, etc.), healthcare services, cosmetics and other consumer goods, pesticides, plant nutrients, and toxic substances, national health emergencies, occupational health, and environmental risks. COFEPRIS has responsibility over all activities related to these products and services: production, distribution, commercialization, imports and exports, advertisement, sales, supply, etc.
Federal Agency of Consumer Affairs (PROFECO)
In order to apply and enforce the provisions of the General Law of Health and the Quality Infrastructure Law, PROFECO performs pertinent surveillance and verification procedures at the places where products or merchandise are managed, stored, transported, distributed, or sold, or at the places where services are rendered, including those in transit.
