This section provides an overview of the Authorities involved in setting regulations and in managing compliance with the food product in scope.
Food Control Administration Unit of the Ministry of Health
Food control in the country is a subject under the Ministry of Health. Food Act No.26 of 1980 [1] is the legal basis for action.
The Food control Administration Unit (FCAU) [2] is responsible for import control, domestic control of food, and issuing export certificates for exporting food items.
Food Regulations are formulated and published by the Ministry of Health under the powers vested under Section 32 of the Food Act [1].
Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI)
Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) [3] is the National Standards Body of Sri Lanka and is functioning under the Sri Lanka Standards Institution Act No. 6 of 1984.
The Schedule of the Food (Adoption of Standards) Regulations 2008 and its amendments [4] lists the food item for which an SLSI standard has been developed per SLS number.
