This section provides an overview of the Authorities involved in setting regulations and in managing compliance with the food product in scope.
1) Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA)
The PSQCA is the National Standardization Authority in Pakistan that establishes Pakistan Standards. PSQCA has its head office in Karachi. The PSQCA is also the Authority that deals with the clearance of the Imports in Pakistan.
Note: the main enforcement activities are carried out by the Provincial Authorities.
2) Punjab Food Authority (PFA)
Punjab is the largest Province of Pakistan with respect to population (i.e. approximately 130 Million people out of a total of 230 Million). Punjab Food Authority is the food regulatory Authority that enforces food safety and quality standards in Punjab. In Punjab, there are some key commercial metropolitan cities of Pakistan, such as Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Sialkot and Gujrat, etc. The head office of the Punjab Food Authority is located in Lahore which is also the Capital city of Punjab Province.
3) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Food Safety and Halal Food Authority
This Authority is entrusted with the mandate of ensuring the enforcement of Food Safety and Quality Standards within the Jurisdiction of KP Province. The main cities included in the province are Peshawar and Abbottabad. The head office of the Authority is situated in Peshawar the capital city of the Province.
4) Sindh Food Authority
This Authority performs the same functions as other Provincial Authorities within the jurisdiction of Sindh Province. Karachi and Hyderabad are the main commercial cities of this Province. The head office of Sindh Food Authority is located in Karachi, the capital city of the Province.
5) Balochistan Food Authority
This Authority performs the same functions as other Provincial Authorities within the jurisdiction of Baluchistan. Quetta is the main commercial city and Capital city of the Province. The head office of the Authority is located in Quetta.
6) Some Small Jurisdiction Authorities
There are other small Food Authorities that operate in some smaller jurisdictions of Pakistan, these include:
- Military Lands and Cantonment Group Authority
- Gilgit-Baltistan Food Authority
- Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Food Authority
- Islamabad Food Authority
